Research Matters welcomes increased investment in R&I

Statement on the European Commission’s MFF proposal of 16 July 2025

Yesterday’s proposal to dedicate €175 billion of the next EU long-term budget (2028-2034) to Horizon Europe is great news for the research and innovation (R&I) sector and for Europe’ future.

This unprecedented level of funding is an important step towards our campaign’s core message to double the upcoming EU’s R&I budget to €200 billion. The R&I community is thankful to the European Commission for responding to our call and strengthening R&I in the EU’s priorities.

While we await the full details, this proposal sends a clear and powerful message: Europe understands that investing in science is essential to building a stronger, more sustainable, and resilient future for all.

We remain committed to working actively to ensure that this ambitious investment is maintained throughout the upcoming negotiations.
